Hugh Lawson Shearer

The Jamaica Teachers' Association received with deep regret the news of the passing of the Most Hon. Hugh Lawson Shearer. Mr. Shearer was a colossus in the Trade Union movement and, apart from his sterling contribution to the development of the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union, played a giant role in the creation of the JTURDC and later, the JCTU.

He was the quintessential union man who gave of his all to the movement. An astute politician (senator and member of parliament) he rose through the ranks to occupy the nations' highest elected position - that of Prime Minister. He was recognised and admired by all as a statesman.

The President and members of the Jamaica Teachers' Association pay tribute to a great Jamaican and an eminent labour leader, Most Hon. Hugh Lawson Shearer.

We extend condolences to his wife Dr. Denise Eldemire Shearer, his children and his colleagues in the Jamaica Labour Party and the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union.
