J.T.A. GOLDEN TORCH AWARD
The Golden Torch Award was implemented by the JTA in 1991 to recognize teachers
who have given long and meritorious service to education in Jamaica. Before
this, there was no programme to recognize teachers for their service - many
times given under conditions requiring much personal sacrifice.
The first awards were presented
in 1993. Since then, over 700 teachers have received the award.
ALCAN Jamaica Company and
the JTA Co-operative Credit Union have collaborated with the JTA in sponsoring
the award since 1993. Blue Cross of Jamaica became one of the sponsors in 1998.
The award is given to members
of the Association who have given thirty-five or more of service as a teacher
in Jamaica and are still in active service.
Nomination forms are sent
to schools each year for principals to indicate teachers on staff who satisfy
the criteria.
The names of the recipients
are published in the annual teachers' day newspaper supplements. The award is
presented at a special function during the first week in July each year.
