Message - President, University of Technology, Dr. Rae Davis
I am pleased to extend congratulations to the Jamaica Teachers’ Association on reaching its fortieth anniversary of service to teaching profession and the nation’s education sector. Forty years of service is an important milestone that should be celebrated with pride. The success of the Association in promotion professionalism and performance in the education sector over the years is testament to the committed men and women who have given sterling service to ensure the continuity and work of the Association.
Our country’s educators are acutely aware or the many challenges to education in Jamaica. As partners in the education process, however, we must continuously renew our commitment to making fundamental improvements in the system. Our young people are counting on us to develop new strategies to deal with old problems. Among the major challenges are deficiencies in literacy and numeracy and declining standards in values and attitudes among our young people it is no secret that in order to increase the level of literacy and numeracy, we must pay more attention and allocate more resources to basic education. If we can successfully build strong foundations in the pre and early school years, and instill values and attitudes from early, then we can eliminate some of the problems at others levels of the educational system.
The University of Technology, Jamaica is pleased to be partners in preparing well-trained graduates for the teaching profession and other areas of industry, who can positively influence education and development in a highly competitive globalized economy.
Again, congratulations to the Jamaica Teachers’ Association on your many achievements. I wish for the Association every success with the activities planned for your fortieth anniversary celebrations.
Rae A. Davis
