Eric Downie: Stalwart of Education Passes
The Daily Gleaner
14 December 2004

JAMAICA HAS lost a stalwart in the field of education. Eric Downie has helped to shape the education system of modern Jamaica. He has given outstanding service at different levels of the system including as classroom teacher and administrator. His four decades of work in education and the quality of his contribution are not easily matched by anyone.

Although a tough negotiator for the nation`s teachers, he was always guided by a strong sense of professionalism in the way in which he conducted the affairs of the Jamaica Teachers` Association. His interest in education transcended his desire for better working conditions and remuneration for teachers. He was noted for settling matters in a non-confrontational manner and with sensitivity to both teachers and employer. He was willing to take the long-term view and always preferred a holistic approach to addressing the needs of the education system.

Jamaica has lost an outstanding son, and the education fraternity, a gentle giant.

I extend my condolences to his family and the entire education fraternity.

† P.J. Patterson,
Prime Minister
